Prepare Properly For Your LPN NCLEX Certification Exam

You have just spent a year in nursing training and you are ready to start working as a licensed practical nurse. Before you do though, you need to be board certified, so the board of nursing in each state administers the national council licensure examination (NCLEX) that you must pass in order to be licensed to practice. It is a long and difficult exam, but if you've completed an accredited course, studied hard and look into the requirements of the exam, passing your LPN NCLEX certification exam is not impossible.

LPN Certification Exam Procedures

Your LPN certification exam will be taken all together in 1 day, will cost you $200 and will last about 5 hours, including time to train you on using the computer. The whole thing is computerized and uses the CAT system, or computerized adaptive testing. This means that although there is a minimum number of questions, which is 85, you could be obligated to answer anywhere between that number and 205.

The computer detects of your answer is right or wrong immediately, and if it is wrong, you will be given another questions at a lower difficulty level, but you will need to answer more questions to prove your competency level. If you get a question right, the following one is more difficult but requires you to answer fewer questions since you have established your competency quicker.

Some of the subjects you can expect to find questions on are infection control, early detection and prevention of illnesses, adaptation, safe environment control, pharmacological therapies, reducing risk factors, basic care and promoting health.

Although the computer records your score immediately, your LPN NCLEX certification exam will be graded a second time by the testing service of the National Council. You will then receive your results in the mail about a month later. If you pass, you can move on to looking for employment, but if you fail you can take the test again as often as you need to in 91 day intervals.

Preparing For The Exam

To prepare for your test, your LPN training should suffice, but you are also able to download sample tests from the internet to help you practice. Additionally, there are books you can buy with sample questions, like Saunders Comprehensive Review for NCLEX-PN or Mosby's Questions and Answers for NCLEX-PN. The test is tough, but with the right amount of preparation, you can do it.

Unfortunately, the LPN NCLEX certification exam is a mandatory stress that all licensed practical nurses have to endure, but take your time in reviewing your material and do a few sample tests to become familiar with the format. If you are aware of what is expected of you, you should pass it with ease.
