Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher Course

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who has not been working in the field for some time may need to do a Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher Course in order to reactivate his or her license. Regardless of whether or not a refresher course is required, it is probably advisable to make sure that your nursing skills are up to date with current information and standards. The fact that you have completed this course will probably also make it easier to get a new position once your license is activated as well since the employer will know that you have done something to make sure your skills are fresh in your mind and up to date.

LPN Programs

Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher Course

There are LPN Refresher Courses available in all sorts of different formats, including distance education, online, and classroom based programs. All of these require you to complete some sort of theory and knowledge study and pass a test to insure that you have learned the appropriate information and then a number of hours of clinical study so that you can get some practice in applying the theory you have learned. Whichever format of Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher Course you choose, you should check to see that it is approved in your state or it will not serve your purposes.

Requirements

Before being accepted into a Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher Course offered by a college, you will need to be able to meet the prerequisites. These usually include proof that you have at one point completed an LPN training course, a current or past license to practice as an LPN, a temporary or permanent LPN license to allow you to do your clinical study, professional liability insurance, and CPR certification. Check with the programs you are considering to determine whether there are any other requirements. Some programs require additional things such as a urine drug screen or a physical as well as the above mentioned prerequisites.

During the LPN Course, it is usually required that students pass each part of the course with a C or better average within two tries of taking that section of the course or else they might be withdrawn from the program.

Upon completion of the Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher Course nurses are usually awarded a certificate of completion, with some programs also sending a letter to the State Board of Nursing at the student's request in order to assist them in the process of reinstating their license.
