Licensed Practical Nurse Exam

It is amazing the number of people going into the nursing field today. In order to become a licensed practical nurse, a person must first pass the Licensed Practical Nurse Exam.

Getting Your License

Licensed Practical Nurse Exam

Although the Registered Nurse degree is the most sought after degree in the nursing field, a lot of people do not have the financial resources to complete the RN degree first. Therefore, they seek to obtain licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse instead. This way they can work in the field for a while and then go back to school to get their RN degree later on.

To become a Licensed Practical Nurse or a Licensed Vocational Nurse (depending on where you live), you first have to pass the Licensed Practical Nurse Examination. This exam is the NCLEX-PN test. It is given all over the country in many different locations. All 50 states require that a person pass the NCLEX-PN before they can become licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Testing Method

This test is computer based and can take as long as five hours to complete. The computer test is adaptive which means it changes the questions based on the answers you've given to other questions. The more correct answers you get, the harder the test will get until you master the specific test area.

The more wrong answers you get, the more questions you will be asked until you can prove you either know enough about the subject matter to pass that particular part of the Licensed Practical Nurse Exam or until you prove you do not know enough to pass. The lowest number of questions possible on the test is 85. However, you could be asked as many as 205.

When you finish the LPN Exam, the test is scored and the score is reported to your state licensing board. Either they will be told you passed or that you failed. The NCLEX-PN is the same as the NCLEX-RN only on a less advanced level.

The areas covered on the LPN Exam include Safety, Infection Control, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Physiological Integrity, Psychosocial Integrity , Reduction of Risk Potential, Psychological Adaptation and Pharmacological Therapies.

When someone actually passes the LPN Exam, this is a big deal. It is truly a huge step in advancing your career potential into the field of nursing. The skills necessary to get your LPN certificate being mastered in school means you have what it takes to pass your Licensed Practical Nurse Exam.
